John H. Wilkerson, Jr. , was born in Mobile, the son of John H. and Lille Mae Wilkerson. He attended public and private schools in Mobile, graduating from University Military School in 1961, and from the University of Alabama, A.B. 1966 and J.D. 1972.
He served as Law Clerk for Chief Justice Howell Heflin in 1972 and as Research Analyst for the Supreme Court from 1972-75. In May 1975, he was appointed Clerk of the Court of Civil Appeals.
In 1968, he married the former Janice Elaine Blackledge of Huntsville. They have three children: Wendy, John III, and Lee. He is a deacon in First Baptist Church, Montgomery, and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Montgomery. He began teaching law at Jones Law Institute in 1974, and is a past president of the National Conference of Appellate Court Clerks.
